ENGINES - 4LK

4LK four cylinder engine with oil operated reverse gear and 2:1 ratio reducing gear. This engine at one time powered the British Navy Midget Submarine and embodies certain design features developed for that period of historic service. In September 1943 two Gardner 4LK powered midget subs entered a Norwegian Fjord and crippled the 41,000 ton German battleship 'Tirpitz', a thousand miles from the nearest British base. The 4LK achieves a high power-to-weight and power-to-space ratio at moderate revolutions per minute. At 1800 rpm the 4LK develops 51 bhp.
